I randomly read the Boston Globe obituaries, and I just learned that one of my patients passed away. In the emergency department I only have contact with patients for a few hours at a time, and so it is a big deal with patients get under my skin like this one did.

There are times when I wish I were a religious person so that I could take perverse pleasure in knowing someone was going to rot in hell.

I know that's an awful thing to say. I wish I had a better way to cope with the injustice in the world.

this is what I'm talking about - TMI for the faint of heartCollapse )

Are they KIDDING?

Hightlight of my night: I had an 8 month old patient who fell off a bed at home and bonked his head. A head CT scan was done just in case because he may have sustained a concussion...and incidentally he had a huge brain tumor nearly filling one of his ventricles.

Turns out the mother, the 8 month old, and her 2 year old son were living in a battered women's shelter because the piece of shit father beat up the 2 year old and attempted to kill the mother.

What an unfair situation. I spent most of my shift hugging and lending a sympathetic ear to the mother, since I had no idea what else to do.

My good friend Colin is staying with me for a few days so he can interview for jobs in the vicinity, and today happens to be his birthday. I was overjoyed to have a houseguest I could cook for, since Colin will eat literally anything that's placed in front of him (and cooking for just one tends to be depressing).

yummy goodness.Collapse )
